Predictable rhythm. Real free time.

Daily routines

Good structure doesn't restrict — it creates room to breathe. Weekdays follow a clear, dependable rhythm: study time, meals, activities and rest all have their place, so students never have to wonder what comes next. That predictability is exactly what makes weekends feel like real time off — space to properly rest, spend time with friends, and follow the things they're genuinely interested in.

It's a rhythm that pays off long after boarding, too. By the time our students arrive at university, managing their own time isn't a new skill they have to learn under pressure — it's already second nature.

The non-negotiables

A shared life needs a few firm rules, and we are open about ours. They are simple, fair, and the same for everyone:

  • Breakfast and dinner are communal events (attendance compulsory).
  • Students sign in and out at the house whenever they come and go.
  • Students must keep their own rooms clean and complete chores according to a schedule
  • The evening study hour is device-free and compulsory, so focus and rest are protected.
  • Lights out at 22:00; devices off at 23:00.

We talk these expectations through with students rather than simply imposing them, which is exactly how young people learn to make good choices for themselves and develop independence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Always Someone to Ask

A missed delivery. A dentist appointment. A flight that needs rebooking. Whatever the question, there's always a tutor or adult ready to help. That's the quiet advantage of a small, close-knit community: nothing falls through the cracks.

Students learn to do their own laundry from day one — a small habit, a big step toward independence.

Our staff guide students on sensible spending and budgeting, in keeping with our approach of structured independence.

There is on-call support and clear procedures at every step, with families kept fully informed.

Yes — boarding tutors are informed of all arrivals and departures, for holidays, weekend trips, and everything in between.

Term dates are clear and predictable, planned well in advance — especially valuable for families abroad.

Life Beyond the Classroom

Evenings and weekends at IS OWL are anything but quiet. This is where students discover who they are — trying something new, taking the lead, and building the kind of friendships that last well beyond school.

Fortnightly Highlights

Every second weekend, staff plan a bigger, organised activity for the whole house — a sports fixture or tournament, a trip to a nearby city or landmark, a cultural outing, or a creative project. These fortnightly highlights give the term its shape, take students out to explore Germany, and create the shared memories every community is built on. They alternate with quieter weekends, so there's always a steady rhythm — something to look forward to, and time to simply switch off.

Weekends Worth Staying For

Beyond the planned highlights, weekends bring a mix of the active and the relaxed: sport and fitness, sign-out outings, cultural visits, and simple downtime with friends in the house. There's always something to join — and always room to just be.

Move. Breathe. Thrive.

Through our 'Move. Breathe. Thrive.' philosophy, physical activity and wellbeing aren't just built into house life — students are actively encouraged to organise their own activities, join a local sports club, or hit the gym. It's never an obligation. It's one of the best ways to make friends, clear your head, and stay well, even far from home.

Food

Eating well, together

Shared meals are one of the warmest parts of house life and for students far from home, the table is where a lot of belonging happens. We take food seriously: fresh, balanced and genuinely enjoyed, with full care for every dietary, cultural and religious need.

Fresh, regional and seasonal

Our kitchen cooks with regional and seasonal fruit and vegetables, sourced locally where we can. It means food that tastes better and is better for our students, plates that change with the year, and a quiet, everyday lesson in eating well.

A world on the menu

With students from across the globe under one roof, our menu travels too. Alongside German and European staples, we serve international meals that reflect the home countries of our community. It’s a simple way to celebrate where everyone comes from, broaden every palate, and make sure each student finds something on the table that tastes like home.

Buffet style — your plate, your way

Meals are served buffet style, so students choose what and how much they take — and, just as importantly, season their own food to taste. No single dish can suit a dozen nationalities at once; letting each student build their own plate solves that, respects different tastes, and doubles as one more small, daily practice in independence and personal choice.

A Life Well Balanced

Structure, freedom, friendship and food — together, they make up the rhythm of everyday life at IS OWL. It's this balance that turns a boarding house into a home: predictable enough to feel safe, and rich enough to feel truly lived. Students leave not just with grades, but with the habits, confidence and independence to thrive wherever life takes them next.
